SIP Child Safety Fair at Olympia Nissan & Olympia Chrysler Jeep Mitsubishi

SIP Child Safety Fair presented by Bruce Titus Olympia Chrysler, Jeep, Mitsubishi and Olympia Nissan was a big hit among parents and kids alike.

The event was held in the area directly behind Olympia Nissan at 2220 Carriage St SW in Olympia.  Everyone was invited (see previous blog entry for event details).

We had some great vendors on hand to lend advice and provide information about area events and organizations.

World Martial Arts was on hand to demonstrate the positive side of Martial Arts and to discuss basic and practical self defense with parents and small children.  Marla, a parent of a 7 yo little girl was impressed by the daughter of the owner and her confidence and had this to say:  "I always thought Martial Arts [Karate] was all about teaching kids to fight, I learned today that it is about teaching them not to fight.  A real eye opener."  After a demonstration by the owner's daughter (a couple days shy of 12 years old) and seeing her confidence Marla will be enrolling her daughter in a beginning class at the end of the summer.  She further commented: "every little girl should be given this opportunity".  This was a sentiment shared by many who took the opportunity to meet with this great group of people.

On hand were team members from Alley Oop Gymnastics.  The ongoing goal was about education.  They had a great little obstacle course for the wee ones, and it was fun for them, and they felt that they had accomplished great things with a grand "ta da!" in the hula hoop.  This helped show parents that gymnastics is not all about the Olympics and balance beams, but about keeping kids moving and having fun.  They had the opportunity to discuss all of the different levels, and services that their gym offered.  They were  a wonderful addition to have on hand.

Animal Services of Olympia were on hand with some wonderful display material to educate kids about the animal behavior.  The board had easy to read and understand graphics about animal temperment, and how to "listen" to what the animal was saying.  The kids were very receptive to this wonderful information.  In addition they had a lot of information regarding services they offer, and helpful tips available to anyone.  To contact Animal Service regarding animal questions please call:  360.352.2510.  They are also available for events such as this, school fairs etc.  They are eager to get their message out to the community.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Thurston County were on hand to share all of the programs that they have available to the children of Thurston County.  On Saturday they even brought a ping pong table!  That was a lot of fun.  The Boys and Girls Clubs of Thurston County have some incredible Summer programs, Field Trips and other engaging programs for the youth of the area.  Please check them out.

Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation were on hand with coloring books, a bean bag toss (that was deceptively hard if you were over 40) and lots and lots of information regarding all of the programs going on in the area year round.  There are just too many to list here, please visit their website at :  olympiawa.gov/parks .

Also on hand were the United Way,  the American Red Cross, and WIC each providing valuable information regarding area resources.

While the Sheriff's department volunteers were on hand to provide retinal scans, their computer and equipment were just not cooperating, however, if you would like to get this done you can visit the Thurston County Sheriff's Office website for information on their next event.

One of the funnest parts was watching small children see their fingerprints show up on the scanner and then print out on their ID card.  They had a lot of fun with the camera, making faces and being general wiggle worms, which is the entire point of this event.  Provide safety training in a non threatening, fun environment so they will remember it when it counts.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, and everyone who stopped by and took advantage of this great opportunity.
